Rekeying locks

Rekeying Locks in Halifax and HRM

Rekeying means I change the inside of your existing lock so the old keys stop working and only the new keys do. The lock stays on the door. Nothing gets replaced. It costs a lot less than buying new hardware and it takes a few minutes per lock.

Just Moved Into a New Place?

You have no idea how many keys to that house are out there. The previous owner, their family, a cleaner, a contractor, whoever rented it before them. Nobody hands over every copy, because nobody remembers where they all went. Rekeying the exterior locks on day one is one of the cheapest things you will ever do for your own peace of mind, and I can key them all alike so you carry one key instead of four.

Tenant Moved Out

This is the job I do most. Tenant leaves, I rekey, the old keys are dead, and the new tenant gets a fresh set. I work with landlords and property managers across HRM and I can usually be there the same day or the next. If you manage more than one building, call me and we will sort out a rate that makes sense for ongoing work instead of quoting it fresh every time.

New Construction Handover

Builders call me at the end of a job. During the build the construction key has been in the hands of every trade that came through the house, plus whoever they lent it to. Before the owner takes possession all of it gets rekeyed so only their key works. I can do a whole house in one visit and key every door alike, so the new owner gets one key and a clean start.

Staff Changes at Your Business

Somebody leaves and you do not get the key back, or you are not sure how many copies exist. Rekeying is faster and cheaper than replacing commercial hardware and it works just as well. I can also key different doors to different levels of access, so the front door opens for everyone while the office and the stock room stay restricted.

Lost Your Keys?

If your keys are gone and anything on that keyring identifies where you live, rekey. A key on its own is not much use to somebody. A key with an address attached is a different story. I can rekey without the original key, so it does not matter that you have nothing left to hand me.

Rekey or Replace?

Rekey if the lock works properly and you just want the old keys dead. Replace if the lock is worn out, sticking, damaged, or if you want to upgrade to something better. I will tell you straight which one you are looking at. If a rekey does the job, that is what I will quote, because there is no reason for you to pay for hardware you do not need.

What It Costs

There is a service call, then a set rate per lock, and two keys are included. Commercial work is priced differently to residential. Either way you get the full number before I start, including travel if you are outside my usual area. What I quote is what you pay.

Need It Done Today?

Rekeying is usually something you book in, but if it is urgent just say so when you call. If I can move things around to get to you the same day, I will. Urgent and after hours work is priced differently to a booked job, and I will tell you what that is on the phone before I come out.

Why Call S.E.S?

It is just me. I answer my own phone, I show up when I say I will, and I charge what I quoted. Fully insured. I try to fix before I replace and I will not recommend work you do not need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does rekeying actually mean?

I take the lock apart, change the pins inside, and set it to a new key. The lock stays on your door and looks exactly the same. The only difference is that the old keys no longer turn it.

Q: How much does rekeying cost in Halifax?

There is a service call plus a set rate per lock, with two keys included. Commercial is priced differently to residential. Call me with how many locks you have and where you are, and I will give you the full number on the phone.

Q: Should I rekey or replace my locks?

Rekey if the lock still works and you just want the old keys dead. Replace if it is worn, sticking or damaged, or if you want to upgrade. I will tell you which one you actually need when I look at it.

Q: I just bought a house. Do I really need to rekey?

I would. You have no way of knowing how many copies of that key are out there or who has them. It is one of the cheapest things you can do when you move in.

Q: Can you rekey without the original key?

Yes. I do not need the old key to rekey a lock.

Q: Can you key all my locks to one key?

Yes, as long as they are the same brand or use the same keyway. If they are mixed, I will tell you what can be matched and what cannot before I start.

Q: How long does it take?

A few minutes per lock once I am there. Most houses are done in well under an hour.

Q: My tenant moved out. How fast can you get there?

Usually same day or next day. Call me with the address and I will give you an honest time.

Q: Can you come out today?

Sometimes. Tell me when you call that it is urgent and I will see what I can move. Urgent and after hours work costs more than a booked job, and I will tell you the price before I come.
